Key Responsibilities of the Accounting Director:
Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning processes in conjunction with the Executive Director; monitors progress and keep the senior leadership team abreast of the organization’s financial status. This role involves a deep understanding of the fundamentals of accounting.
Provide overall financial oversight and monitoring, including the development and implementation of sound fiscal management practices and internal controls.
Allocate staff and resources within budgetary constraints to meet program needs; formulate, modify, and interpret agency policies, procedures, and programs for staff, public and private agencies and institutions, the community, and clients; ensure compliance with Federal, State, and City laws and mandates, in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
Provide strategic leadership in data and cybersecurity management for the organization.
Ensure that accounting records are prepared, maintained, and reported in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Audit, and Fiscal requirements.
Conduct financial analysis to interpret trends, and variances from budgets related to revenue and spending. Initiate corrective actions and develop follow-up controls as needed.
Set up schedules, procedures, and systems to ensure timely, informative, and accurate reporting of all financial data to internal stakeholders. Provide appropriate training, advice, and counsel to the staff and leadership team consistent with established financial policy.
Coordinate and lead the annual audit process; liaise with external auditors and the finance committee of the board of directors.
Supervise human resources duties including payroll, employee benefits, retirement plans, and insurance.
Coordinate, analyze, and communicate DLEC’s financial performance to the Board.
Provide coaching, guidance, and development opportunities to direct reports.
Work with direct reports to ensure efficient financial processes and controls are in place.
Directs the monthly general ledger closing process including preparation and review of account reconciliations and general ledger journal entries.
What the Successful Candidates Will Have:
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or Business, or related field is required. A CPA or MBA is preferred.
5+ years of financial management experience with progressively more responsible fiscal, administrative, and supervisory duties in a non-profit accounting environment.
Sound knowledge of compliance regulations within the non-profit sector.
Financial reporting experience, use of Sage MIP or similar systems highly desirable.
Strong computer skills required with expert-level Excel proficiency.
Experience overseeing budget development, non-profit accounting, philanthropic due diligence processes and other federal single audit requirements.
Experience with grants from the City of Seattle, King County, Washington State and/or Federal government and complex cost allocation methods.
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively across departments and with external stakeholders.
Strong organizational and time management skills, ability to prioritize tasks to achieve deliverables and meet deadlines.
Bilingual in English and a language spoken by DLEC families is a plus (Spanish, Amharic, Cantonese, Vietnamese).
Salary Range: $95,000 to $105,000/ DOE
