Job Title: Copywriter Department: Marketing Job Region: Store Support – Portland Reports-To: Senior Manager of Creative Strategy Exemption Status (typically): Exempt Requirements: As a retail grocer, we operate 7 days/week and 365 days/year and as such work in support of our stores may include evening and weekend hours per the needs of the business.

About the role: As part of the in-house Creative Services Team, the Copywriter is responsible for developing engaging content and meaningful stories that distinguishes our brand, connects our community and motivates shoppers to visit our stores. This role plays a vital role in sharing our brand story, and in communicating seasonal offerings and programs through all of our various channels including our website, social media and email communications. The Copywriter works cross-functionally with the Marketing and Merchandising teams across all regions and both New Seasons Market and New Leaf Community Markets brands.

Position Responsibilities:

Conceptualizes, develops, and produces compelling stories and communications for all marketing and advertising mediums that strengthens the New Seasons Market and New Leaf Community Markets brands. Including, but not limited to digital, social media, print, video, and radio.
Strong understanding of how the digital space works and how customers engage online, bringing that expertise to all projects.
Strategizes how to bring marketing campaigns effectively to life online and in-store with the ability to optimize them for mobile.
Understands the current brand voice and helps evolve it so we stay fresh and relevant in our customer’s minds.
Concepts, writes and edits content for print and digital mediums including emails, social media, mobile, SMS and website.
Partners with key stakeholders to gather information and craft stories that are engaging, accurate and in our brand voices.
Understands the subtle nuisances and easily navigates between the New Seasons and New Leaf brand voices.
Leads the digital voice strategy and provides expertise on how it’s different than traditional marketing channels.
Supports writing/editing needs in other channels including print and packaging.
Works on larger product and program “naming” projects, handling all of the research and concepting before presenting to internal clients.
Takes direction from written briefs or spoken ideas and converts to designs, images, layouts and other requested deliverables.
Interacts with external partners, such as vendors, farmers and nonprofits, to gather information for the creation of copy for advertising, websites, e-mails, social media platforms, and in-store point of sale signs and collateral.
Participates in creative design meetings, marketing brainstorms and contributes ideas as a knowledge / subject expert.
Presents work to a larger group and able to accept feedback with a good, positive attitude.
Tools and Equipment Used (not all inclusive): This position works with standard office equipment. May be required to use the following tools and equipment when working in stores or offsite; baler, hand truck, POS, industrial kitchen equipment (i.e. blast chiller, grill, knives/blades, oven, grills, scales, etc.) and basic housekeeping / janitorial items.
This position works consistently at a light work level and may be asked to work on occasion at a medium or heavy work level when supporting stores or other offsite events. Frequently required to sit, walk, reach and grasp. Occasionally required to be on feet with a mix of standing and walking throughout shift. Up to occasionally, dependent on location, required to climb stairs, step stool and /or ladders.
Performs other tasks and duties as assigned.

What you Bring as a Candidate:

Minimum of 5 years of experience required.
Previous food and/or grocery specific industry experience preferred. Experience in a multi-unit, high growth retail or similar environment required.
Experience in professional copywriting, including experience with marketing campaigns and digital marketing required.
Previous experience writing for advertising in a retail setting strongly preferred. Agency or grocery experience a plus.
Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, English or related fields required, however relevant work experience in lieu of formal education is acceptable.
Mid-level proficiency with MS Office. Skills to learn new computer programs and systems.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including tact and diplomacy, to collaborate, negotiate and communicate effectively and professionally with cross-functional partners at all levels in the company.
Proven passion for writing about and understanding food and food culture.
Ability to write concisely and creatively, using voice and tone consistent with brand.
Strong proofreading and editing skills with impeccable attention to detail, quality and presentation.
Demonstrated proficiency with social media for both targeted and broad-based outreach/communications.

Physical and Environmental Work Space: Work occurs in office, a variety of off-site environments and in a grocery store environment which includes surfaces that can be wet and slippery, moderate noise level, and temperature extremes in controlled environments in the cooler and freezer, and depending on location, working outside in all temperatures.
