Director, Experience Design

The Director of Experience Design (XD) oversees the XD organization for Driveway, of which includes: Product Design, Content Design, UX Research, and Design System Teams.

The Director reports to the Vice President of Digital Innovation.

Responsibilities

Lead an organization of multiple, interconnected creative disciplines to develop their respective crafts and teams, and deliver meaningful and unified artifacts.

Evaluate the role and opportunities of various disciplines, and align hiring practices to overall business direction and strategic vision.

Foster a culture of excellence and commitment to craft and high-quality execution in a hybrid, geographically dispersed environment.

Champion cohesion and consistency in product design that unites a growing family of features, while continuing to nurture and evangelize a culture of innovation.

Bridge across other Lithia departments, such as Marketing and Operations, to ensure a successful Driveway experience for customers and users.

Drive adoption of standard practices and processes as needed to deepen team maturity, and ensure high quality.

Collaborate with Head of Product and Head of Engineering, or similar roles to promote alignment across disciplines within the organization.

Regularly evaluate our design execution to maintain alignment with strategic business objectives.

Recruit, assess, hire, develop, and retain an organization of creative team members while fostering a unified and collaborative XD team environment.

Regularly review staffing levels and organizational structure to sufficiently meet the demand needs of the business.

Skills and Qualifications

10+ years of experience working within and delivering enterprise-class UI & UX Design.

5+ years of experience managing Product Designers.

3+ years managing other Managers.

Experience managing a team in a high growth environment; prior success with managing employees across multiple products, programs, and/or departments.

Experience providing direction to successfully deliver on priorities and build repeatable, sustainable processes that support operational excellence.

Fluency in best practices for UI design, information architecture, and interaction design; practical knowledge of user-centered design practices and lifecycles; ability to provide and effectively communicate strategic and tactical recommendations based on data and optimal design practices.

Comprehensive knowledge of the latest design concepts, emerging technologies, and other developments in the user experience field.

Effectiveness in working across organizational boundaries to influence and deliver results.

Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills; the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and persuasively across different audiences and varying levels of the organization.

Empathetic and self-aware. You can read a room and sense when something is right, wrong, or just “off.”

Communicative and responsive. You listen to understand, not just to talk when it’s your turn.

Hands-on experience with: Figma, ZeroHeight, Whimsical/Miro, Favro, and Azure DevOps preferred.

Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in Design, HCI, or related field or equivalent professional experience.
