About the Division:
The Electronic Services Division provides statewide public safety telecommunications, land mobile radio, microwave, and engineering services to the WSP, its partner agencies, and customers.

The Field Support Section provides day-to-day support to the WSP and its mission critical voice and data communications systems. These systems support not only the WSP, but its partner agencies and other public safety customers.


This is what you will do: The Electronic Communications System Technician – Shop (ECST-Shop) is a journeyman level technician that provides day to day maintenance, installation, and support of the WSP public safety communication equipment including mobile, portable, speed measuring device (SMD), telecommunications devices such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephones, and various other electronic equipment. This position works closely with ESD management and supervisors, Senior Telecommunications Specialists (STS), ECST-Shop technicians, PMD Fleet and Supply sections, external customers, and WSP agency personnel. This can range from project planning, providing repair and maintenance of issued electronic equipment and answering technical questions, to providing training or assisting the customer with problem resolution by referring them to the appropriate resource. Travel and other stuff: Technicians may perform work at remote communications sites to support STS’s for radio system maintenance and repair and/or projects. This travel may result in overnight stays. These locations are accessed by unimproved or primitive roads and may exist in remote areas of the state. Personnel may be required to work outside in all weather conditions. The technicians are assigned a shop area they are responsible for. This area may include a vehicle bay available for repair work. Hazards may include but are not limited to the following: Broad spectrum electromagnetic energy, chemical and bio hazards, falling debris, slippery conditions, hot or cold temperatures, high decibel noise levels, and electrical exposures.


Required Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED equivalent
Possess or obtain a valid, unrestricted Washington State Driver’s License
Two years of formal education or training in electronics, or two years of paid experience in maintenance and repair of at least one of the following: two-way radio systems and equipment, digital and analog microwave carrier systems, wireless and wired data network systems.
Good customer service skills
Resourcefulness in problem solving

Desired Qualifications:

General Radiotelephone Operator License issued by the Federal Communications Commission, technician certification by the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO), or similar professional certifications.
Strong background in Land Mobile Radio (LMR) digital and analog communications
Strong background in analog and digital carrier grade microwave systems
Strong background in IP/MPLS technology and systems
Good understanding of Internet Protocol based systems and technology
Experience and understanding of computer based applications
Knowledge and understanding of computer networks, wiring standards, and protocols
Technical writing ability
