POSITION TITLE: Pathology Transcriptionist
POSITION SUMMARY:
Performs secretarial and transcription duties for pathology, histology, and cytology. Reports to Pathology Supervisor and Laboratory Administrative Director.

Contributes in problem-solving activities, intra-and inter-departmentally. Demonstrates flexible staffing needs within the department. Uses department resources (supplies, equipment) in a cost effective manner. Communicates effectively and in a timely manner to medical director, co-workers and physicians through informal updates, written and verbal communications. Consistently meets attendance standards and follows the department standards for “calling in” and requesting time off.
Self-Development: Participates in entity and/or department in-service/training programs related to the job. Actively seeks educational opportunities through self-study, educational institutions or professional based organizations.
Transcription: Transcribes dictation for pathology section. Enters patient history into the computer system. . Reviews and/updates billing information as appropriate Maintains confidentiality of all results. Transcribe memos and letters. Checks reports, memos, and letters for correct grammar. Distributes report, and correspondence. Verifies CPT codes at the beginning and end of the transcription process.
Telephone Communication: Communicates clearly to callers by answering questions, directing calls and screening calls. Maintains a professional demeanor at all times.
Computer-Based Functions: Performs word processing of reports, letters and charts for laboratory managers, pathologists, and section leaders. Maintains databases as needed. Prepares Power Point presentations. Uses Microsoft Office to manage physician calendar, schedule meetings and send emails for department. Compile and tabulate data for QC, presentations, Financials and other projects.
Office Machines: Demonstrates knowledge of office machines including use of fax and copier. Troubleshoots office machines. Contacts Information Systems, Dictation and Facilities management for support.
File: Maintains files of surgical and cytology reports. Prepares slides and reports for conferences and consultations. Cross reference signed Cytology and Histology reports with the pending log, prepare list of reports not completed after 72 hours, and distribute list to pathologist.
Promotes Patient Safety goals: Demonstrates understanding that all employees are responsible for patient safety. Recognizes the importance of reporting errors and near misses to protect and improve patient process.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
Ability to type 60-80 wpm required, attention to detail, work well with others as well as independently, multitasking skills in order to handle multiple interruptions.
PREFERRED:
Medical terminology, word processing, diagnosis and CPT coding; and basic understanding of human anatomy.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
Sedentary physical demand capability. Must be able to prioritize workflow and work independently.
PAY RANGE $15.40-$23.00
