CLASSIFICATION: Classified

SHIFT: To be determined, 7 hours per day

CATEGORY: Assistant

LOCATION: Schools To be Determined (Elementary Schools)

REPORTS TO: Special Programs Coordinator and/or Building Principals

SUMMARY: The purpose of this position is to support students with moderate to severe cognitive, communication and/or medical needs to increase their level of independence.

QUALIFICATIONS: At least one-year experience working with students with significant cognitive, physical, and/or communication needs preferred. High school diploma or equivalent is required.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

Applies a variety of instructional approaches as outlined by certified staff in supporting student improvement of functional skills across a variety of settings and people.

Assists the designated teacher(s) with individual and group instruction and management of students.

Assists in developing and implementing individual programs of instruction and support for designated students as directed by the teacher with a minimum of oversight.

Contributes to a positive environment by working closely with the teacher and other classified team members.

Observes, collects data, and records student progress as directed by the teacher.

Prepares and organizes instructional materials as directed.

Demonstrates initiative when supervising students.

Communicates effectively (both orally and in writing) and positively with students, classroom staff and other related service providers.

Demonstrates strong organizational skills, close attention to detail, and appropriate handling of confidential information.

Follows established program procedures with minimal oversight.

Supports the positive behavior of students in the classroom.

Ability to honor professional ethics and confidentiality.

Uses instructional time effectively and efficiently as requested by the teacher, including non-student contact time with minimal oversight.

Engages in meaningful and appropriate professional development opportunities and incorporates feedback and professional learning into practice. Additional training may be required in areas such as medication administration, seizure protocols, airway suctioning, and epi-pen training, as well as positioning and transporting of students.

Duties may include assisting students with feeding protocols, assisting with personal care activities such as toileting and other daily living skills.

Demonstrates awareness of basic legal requirements that govern the provision of special education services (such as IEPs, eligibility, confidentiality, specially-designed instruction, and accommodations).

Demonstrates a positive attitude, flexibility and enthusiasm.

Is punctual and maintains regular attendance.

Other duties as assigned.

The employee must occasionally lift 50 pounds and/or move more than 100 pounds. Work with students who may exhibit aggressive assaultive behavior, as required of specific job assignment.
