Eastern Oregon University (EOU) – Oregon’s Rural University! – is currently accepting applications for a Public Information Representative I. This is an important position that contributes professional work in the University Advancement (UA) Department. It is a 12-month, Full-Time, 1.0 FTE, full-benefits eligible position that reports directly to the Director of Marketing.
The Division of University Advancement works to develop, position, support and advance EOU’s mission and strategic goals. The division is responsible for a wide range of activities that engage the university’s constituents, both externally and internally. The division manages the program areas of Alumni, Development and Fundraising, Government Relations, Marketing and Communications, Community Relations, the EOU Foundation and affiliate organizations.
The EOU Public Information Representative amplifies and coordinates Eastern Oregon University’s voice in the public arena. As a key member of UA’s Marketing team, the incumbent makes integral contributions toward the achievement of the University’s mission and visibility by providing professional communications and social media content to a wide variety of audiences.
Reporting to the Director of Marketing, this position focuses on producing creative content that effectively promotes the university and informs the broader community with materials that are written and edited at the university level in all formats.
Specific duties include: identifying, covering, reporting and tracking media stories about the work and achievements of EOU and our students and employees; managing content on EOU’s social media platforms; providing creative content for print and digital marketing, advertising and promotions; writing and editing for official university communications, including presidential, leadership and crisis communications; serving as managing editor and project coordinator for The Mountaineer magazine and EOU’s Annual Report; providing and overseeing photography needs for the university; and representing UA on committees and special projects as assigned. The incumbent works and makes day-to-day task decisions with considerable independence in close, professional collaboration and coordination with the Director of Marketing and Vice President of University Advancement.ResponsibilitiesMEDIA, AND WRITING/*EDITING* SERVICES
Serve as the initial point of contact for EOU media inquiries and coordinate requests and interviews.
Identify key topics and write strategic news and feature stories about EOU activities, events & accomplishments.
Build, coordinate, and execute media and communications plans under the direction of the Director of Marketing and VP for University Advancement.
Coordinate University Advancement’s public information policies and procedures
Advise members of the EOU community regarding public information policy and procedures
Coach members of the EOU community to respond appropriately to media or public inquiry.
Proactively develop and manage relationships with regional media outlets.
Perform various copywriting and editing duties
Provide photography for news events and special projects.
Incorporate university news and media content into EOU websites and social media streams.
Coordinate freelance writers and content development.
Provide proofing and editing services for various university publications such as the Annual Report, institutional social media posts, etc.
Serve as EOU-Infoline manager and, review, edit, prep and send messages as needed.
Manage the online platform for EOU Alert emergency notification system and assist with all emergency communications.
Maintain university image catalogs and coordinate internal and external requests for photos using the Photoshelter platform.
SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER
Work with the Director of Marketing on EOU’s social media strategy and oversee implementation.
Implement EOU’s social media strategy and oversee social media content.
Generate content for EOU’s social media streams, websites and other online media.
Publish organic content to various social media platforms using third party publishing apps including Sprout Social.
Coordinate EOU’s social media hub to monitor all official EOU social media accounts on campus.
Train and oversee a social media team made up of student workers and interns.
Use social media to drive brand awareness and conversions as measured in Google Analytics and Sprout Social.
Monitor social media for threats to EOU’s brand.
Develop, write, proofread, edit and fact-check content for the web, primarily social media channels but occasionally other digital properties like websites, marketing campaign assets, eblasts and newsletters.
OTHER DUTIES
Participate in university events and serve on committees.
Supervise, hire/fire assigned student positions.
Assist with major University events and projects as a member of the Advancement team.
Complete other projects as assigned by supervisor or VP.
Submit regular project and status reports to supervisor and VP.
Minimum Qualifications
Three years experience in gathering information, writing/producing materials, presenting information to the public and public relations. One year of this experience must have included responsibility for press releases and interaction with the news media.
Bachelor’s Degree or proven experience in news and feature writing, journalism, or public relations; must have college-level writing skills; photography experience; demonstrated computer experience using Macintosh (preferred) and/or Windows and the following software: Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint), Adobe Suite (InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop), WordPress and other web development software and social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.), media tracking software (Meltwater) and media content library experience (Photoshelter). Experience working in a university setting preferred.
Because this position has a considerable amount of impact on the overall University Advancement function, it is responsible for coordinating EOU’s “written” image. Demonstrated experience and competency managing details and working with multiple clients/partners in a time-sensitive workplace is important and required. The incumbent must develop and maintain successful relationships with campus clients and present the University in the best light possible.
Must satisfactorily complete EOU criminal and credential background check. Having a criminal history is not an automatic bar to employment.
